Research Interests
The South lab studies mechanisms of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) initiation and progression with a view to developing preventative or curative intervention. One approach to achieving this goal is to study rare familial tumor prone disorders that can inform on more common cancer. We currently focus on aggressive SCC occurring in patients with the genetic skin blistering disease recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) and use this model to determine pathways that intersect aggressive forms of sporadic SCC, primarily in the head and neck.
